Artis REIT

Sound bite for Twitter and StockTwits is: Dividend Growth REIT. Results of stock price testing is that the stock price is probably reasonable. Liquidity Ratio is awful and the rest of the debt ratios are fine. Some Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are for 2022 are not good, but 5 year coverage is fine. The current dividend yield is high with dividend growth restarting maybe. See my spreadsheet on Artis REIT.

Is it a good company at a reasonable price? I would worry about the Liquidity Ratio. This can cause problems, especially in bad economic times. Although dividends are now going up, the company does not have a good record of dividend increases. The minimum you would want from a REIT is 6% dividends and 2% capital gains to get 8% total return. I would wonder about this company being above the do that over the long term. The stock price is currently reasonable. Some of the tests, like the P/S Ratio test say the stock price is cheap. Recent insider buying is a positive.

I do not own this stock of Artis REIT (TSX-AX.UN, OTC-ARESF). Early in 2013, this company was mentioned as a good REIT to own. Several people I correspond with mentioned this REIT. However, my first view of it is not positive.

When I was updating my spreadsheet, I noticed that insiders are buying, including CEO, CFO and Chairman. Insider buying is at 0.63%, where normal would be at 0.01% to 0.02%. This is after the company had both a bad year and bad quarter. Revenue declined by 11% in 2022 and 0.8% in the first quarter. AFFO declined 1% in 2022 and 6% in the first quarter. FFO went up in 2022 by 3.7% but declined by 3.6% in the first quarter. Cash Flow decline in 2022 by 29% and by 15% in the first quarter.

If you had invested in this company in December 2012, for $1,000.96 you would have bought 64 shares at $15.64 per share. In December 2022, after 10 years you would have received $557.06 in dividends. The stock would be worth $576.64. Your total return would have been $1,133.70. This is a total return would be 1.71% per year with a capital gain of 5.37% and dividends of 7.07%.

Cost Tot. Cost Shares Years Dividends Stock Val Tot Ret
$15.64 $1,000.96 64 10 $557.06 $576.64 $1,133.70

The current dividend yield is high with dividend growth restarting maybe. The current dividend yield is good (7% and above ) at 8.39%. The 5 year median dividend yield is good (5% to 6% ranges) at 5.41%. The 10 year and historical dividend yields are high at 7.14% and 7.14%. Of the past 17 years, dividends have been increased 5 time and decreased 2 times. The rest of the time they were flat. The dividends were decreased in 2018 and 2019 by 50%. Dividends were increased in 2021 by 11% and have been flat since.

Some Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are for 2022 are not good, but 5 year coverage is fine. The DPR for 2022 for EPS is negative as there was an earnings loss. The 5 year coverage is at 77%. The DPR for 2022 for Adjusted Funds from Operations (AFFO) is 63% with 5 year coverage at 61%. The DPR for 2022 for Funds from Operations (FFO) is 43% with 5 year coverage at 44%. The DPR for 2022 for Cash Flow per Share (CFPS) is 48% with 5 year coverage also at 48%. The DPR for 2022 for Free Cash Flow (FCF) is 113% with 5 year coverage at 60%.

Item Cur 5 Years
EPS -315.79% 77.02%
AFFO 63.16% 61.22%
FFO 43.17% 44.12%
CFPS 47.82% 47.85%
FCF 113.48% 59.97%

Liquidity Ratio is awful and the rest of the debt ratios are fine. The Long Term Debt/Market Cap for 2022 is high for fine for 2022 but is too high currently at 1.21. The Long Term Debt went down in 2023, but so did the stock price. The Debt Ratio is good at 1.96. Leverage and Debt/Equity Ratios are fine at 2.04 and 1.85.

The Liquidity Ratio is awful at 0.30 and even Cash Flow after dividends it is only 0.35. You want it at 1.50 or higher. If you add back in current Long Term Debt it is 3.93. If you do this always check that they can roll over debt. Another problem with low Liquidity Ratio is that good assets may have to sold at fire sale prices in bad times to pay current debts. Low Liquidity Ratios are a problem.

The corresponding historical ratios are 3.60, 3.92 and 4.23. The historical ones are low because this stock had earnings losses for the first 8 years. The current P/E Ratio is 15.54 based on a stock price of $17.15 and EPS estimate for 2023 of 0.46. This ratio is above the high ratio of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive.

I also have Adjusted Funds from Operations (AFFO) data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/AFFO Ratios are 9.40, 11.67 and 13.40. The corresponding 10 year ratios are 9.51, 11.78 and 13.34. The current P/AFFO ratio is 9.79 based on a stock price of $17.15 and AFFO estimate for 2023 of $0.73. This ratio is between the low and median ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I also have Funds from Operations (FFO) data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/FFO Ratios are 6.55, 8.13 and 9.70. The corresponding 10 year ratios are 7.47, 8.78 and 9.88. The current P/FFO ratio is 6.22 based on a stock price of $17.15 and FFO estimate for 2023 of $1.15. This ratio is below the low ratio of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively cheap.

I get a Graham Price of $18.08. The 10-year low, median, and high median Price/Graham Price Ratios are 0.53, 0.62 and 0.75. The current P/GP Ratio is 0.40 based on a stock price of $17.15. This ratio is below the low ratio of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I get a 10-year median Price/Book Value per Share Ratio of 0.77. The current P/B Ratio is 0.36 based on a stock price of $17.15, Book Value of $2,296M and Book Value per Share of $19.90. The current ratio is 53% below the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively cheap.

I get a 10-year median Price/Cash Flow per Share Ratio of 8.43. The current P/CF Ratio is 6.87 based on a stock price of $17.15, Cash Flow per Shar estimate for 2023 of $1.04 and Cash Flow of $120M. The current ratio is 19% below the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I get an historical median dividend yield of 7.14%. The current dividend yield is 8.39% based on dividends of $0.60 and a stock price of $17.15. The current dividend yield is 18% above the historical median dividend yield. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I get a 10 year median dividend yield also of 7.14%. The current dividend yield is 8.39% based on dividends of $0.60 and a stock price of $17.15. The current dividend yield is 18% above the 10 year median dividend yield. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

The 10-year median Price/Sales (Revenue) Ratio is 3.45. The current P/S Ratio is 2.17 based on Revenue estimate for 2023 of $381M, Revenue per Share of $3.30 and a stock price of $17.15. The current ratio is 37% below the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively cheap.

Results of stock price testing is that the stock price is probably reasonable. The dividend yield tests are pointing a reasonable stock price. Although at 18%, it is close the 20% and cheap. The P/S Ratio test says the stock price is cheap. I do like the dividend tests because they deal with current values rather than estimates. Except for the P/E Ratio test (which is not a good one for REITS), the rest of the testing points to a reasonable or cheap stock price.

When I look at analysts’ recommendations, I find Buy (1) and Hold (4). The consensus would be a Hold. The 12 month consensus stock price is $8.85. This implies a total return of 32.17% with 23.78% from capital gains and 8.39% from dividends.

Obsidian Energy Ltd

Sound bite for Twitter and StockTwits is: Resource Sector Stock. Results of stock price testing is that the stock price could be relatively expensive. Debt Ratios are good. The dividends have been suspended so I cannot calculate a yield nor a Dividend Payout Ratio. See my spreadsheet on Obsidian Energy Ltd.

Is it a good company at a reasonable price? The current stock price might be expensive. The stock price is up some 906% from December 2020 to now. The P/S Ratio test says the stock price is expensive. In any event it is a resource stock, which is not my favourite sector. In any event, it is a high risk type of stock. The positive thing is that there is lots of insider buying. A lot of my stock price tests are showing the stock as reasonable. It depends on what tests you like.

I do not own this stock of Obsidian Energy Ltd (TSX-OBE, NYSE-OBE). I bought this stock as Maximum Energy Trust in 1998. In November 2001, there was a stock exchange and the stock became Ultimate Energy Fund. In June 2004 fund changed from Ultimate Energy Income Trust to Petrofund Energy. Petrofund Energy merged with Penn West in July 2006. The company changed its name from Penn West Petroleum Ltd. to Obsidian Energy Ltd in 2017. I sold this stock when it was Penn West in 2010 as it was changing to a corporation, but they are also getting back into exploration, rather than just selling oil from their wells.

When I was updating my spreadsheet, I noticed that insiders are buying. The CEO, CFO and Chairman have all bought shares in the past year. Net insider buying is 0.20% where normal would be 0.01% net insider buying or selling. There was a 7 to 1 consolidation in 2019. The stock price hit a low of $0.87 in 2020, but at the end of 2022, the stock price was $8.98. So far this year, it is down 2.6% at $8.75.

The company has started to grow again. The 5 year growth is positive compared to 10 year growth.

5 Revenue Growth 76.43% 12.02%

If you had invested in this company in December 2012, for $1,034.88 you would have bought 14 shares at $73.92 per share. In December 2022, after 10 years you would have received $164.64 in dividends. The stock would be worth $125.72. Your total return would have been $290.36. This is a total return would be a loss of 17.04% per year.

The dividends have been suspended so I cannot calculate a yield nor a Dividend Payout Ratio.

Debt Ratios are good. The Long Term Debt/Market Cap Ratio for 2022 are low and good at 0.30. The Liquidity Ratio is very low at 0.45, but if you add in Cash Flows it is 2.50 and fine. The Debt Ratio is high a good at 3.53. The Leverage and Debt/Equity Ratios are low and good at 1.40 and 0.40.

The Total Return per year is shown below for years of 5 to 27 to the end of 2022. Under the Capital Gain column is the portion of the Total Return attributable to capital gains. Under the Dividend column is the portion of the Total Return attributable to dividends. See chart below. This stock used to be an income trust and therefore originally had very good dividends.

The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/Earnings per Share Ratios are all negative and therefore useless. The corresponding 10 year ratios are also all negative and useless. The corresponding historical ratios are 3.66, 5.80 and 7.06. They are low because there have been so many earnings losses years. The current P/E Ratio is 4.51 based on a stock price of $8.75 and EPS estimate for $1.94. This is a very low P/E Ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively cheap.

I also have Funds from Operations (FFO) Data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/FFO Ratios are 0.31, 1.24 and 2.20. The corresponding 10 year ratios are 1.44, 4.01 and 6.13. The current P/FFO is 1.54 based on FFO for the last 12 months of $5.70 and a stock price of $8.75. This ratio is between the low and median ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I also have Cash Flow from Operations (CFFO) Data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/CFFO Ratios are 0.60, 1.93 and 2.75. The corresponding 10 year ratios are 1.22, 3.20 and 5.44. The current P/CFFO is 1.66 based on FFO for the last 12 months of $5.28 and a stock price of $8.75. This ratio is between the low and median ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I get a Graham Price of $50.01 based on FFO (because numbers are positive and you cannot calculate a GP with negative numbers). The 10-year low, median, and high median Price/Graham Price Ratios are 0.11, 0.27 and 0.41. The current P/GP Ratio is 0.17 based on a stock price of $8.75. The current ratio is between the low and median ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I get a 10-year median Price/Book Value per Share Ratio of 0.35. The current P/B Ratio is 0.45 based on a stock price of $8.75, Book Value of $1,608M and Book Value per Share of $19.50. The current ratio is 28% above the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive.

I get a 10-year median Price/Cash Flow per Share Ratio of 2.87. The current P/CF Ratio is 1.94 based on a stock price of $8.75, Cash Flow per Share estimate for 2023 of $4.52 and Cash Flow of $373M. The current ratio is 33% below the 10 year median. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively cheap.

I cannot do any dividend yield testing because dividends are suspended.

The 10-year median Price/Sales (Revenue) Ratio is 0.76. The current P/S Ratio is 0.93 based on Revenue estimate for 2023 of $775M, Revenue per Share of $9.40 and a stock price of $8.75. The current P/S Ratio is 23% above the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive.

Results of stock price testing is that the stock price could be relatively expensive. I think that the P/S Ratio test is important. That is because Revenue is necessary for earnings and cash flow. If you look at the stock price, since the year-end low in 2020 of $0.87 to the current stock price of $8.75, that is a 906% increase. So, maybe an expensive rating is reasonable. I must admit that most of the other testing are show the price as cheap or reasonable.

When I look at analysts’ recommendations, I find Buy (3) and Hold (2) recommendations. The consensus would be a Buy. The 12 month stock price consensus is $11.30. This implies a total return of 29.14% all from capital gains.

In 2022 and 2021, analysts were saying on Stock Chase Do not buy. In 2022, the analyst did not like the management team. Stock Chase gives this stock 1 star out of 5. Christopher Liew on Motley Fool said that the stock was a top performer and its upward momentum is not over. The company put out a press release on their 2022 results. TMX Group Ltd

Sound bite for Twitter and StockTwits is: Dividend Growth Financial. Results of stock price testing is that the stock price could still be reasonable, but at the top of the reasonableness range. I do not like a lot of the Debt Ratios. The Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are fine. The current dividend yield is moderate with dividend growth moderate. See my spreadsheet on TMX Group Ltd .

Is it a good company at a reasonable price? This company has certainly grown well in the past, but growth is slowing if you compare the growth between 10 and 5 years. Dividends have grown nicely also for shareholders. I do wonder how much more they can grow. I would worry about the debt ratios. The stock price might still be reasonable, but it would be at the top of the reasonableness range.

I do not own this stock of TMX Group Ltd (TSX-X, OTC-TMXXF). I looked at this stock in 2008 after I found it on a list of Strongest Dividend Growth stocks. I am interested in such stocks.

When I was updating my spreadsheet, I noticed that that the company is growing nicely.

Year Item Tot. Growth Per Year
5 Revenue Growth 66.93% 10.79%

The current dividend yield is moderate with dividend growth moderate. The current dividend yield is moderate (2% to 4% ranges) at 2.37%. The 5, 10 and historical dividend yields are also moderate at 2.50%, 2.75% and 2.88%. The dividends have been increasing at a moderate rate (8% to 14% ranges) at 11.2% per year over the past 5 years. The last dividend increase was in 2023 and it was for 4.8%.

The Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are fine. The DPR for 2022 for EPS is 34% with 5 year coverage at 46%. The DPR for 2022 for Adjusted Earnings per Share (AEPS) is 47% with 5 year coverage at 47%. The DPR for 2022 for Cash Flow per Share (CFPS) is 29% with 5 year coverage at 29%. The DPR for 2022 for Free Cash Flow (FCF) is 43% with 5 year coverage at 44%.

I do not like a lot of the Debt Ratios. The Long Term Debt/Market Cap Ratio is low and good at 0.10. The Liquidity Ratio is too low at just 1.01. This means that there is not safety margin. I like a ratio at 1.50. The Debt Ratio is also low at 1.08, but this is classified as a financial and generally anything over 1.04 is acceptable. I think the Leverage Ratio is too high at 13.31 and Debt/Equity Ratio is also too high at 12.31. I do not think that the current ones at 11.33 and 10.66, respectively are good either.

This ratio is between the median and high ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable but above the median.

I also have Adjusted Earnings per Share (AEPS) data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/Adjusted Earnings per Share Ratios are 16.06, 18.62 and 20.00. The corresponding 10 year ratios are 13.74, 15.49 and 17.25. The current P/AEPS Ratio is 19.54 based on a stock price of $29.31 and AEPS estimate for 2023 of $1.50. I get a Graham Price of $22.12. The 10-year low, median, and high median Price/Graham Price Ratios are 0.83, 0.94 and 1.05. The current P/GP Ratio is 1.32 based on a stock price of $29.31. The current ratio is 57% above the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive.

I also have a Book Value per Share estimate for 2023 of $15.20. With a stock price of $29.31 and Book Value of $4,232M, the P/B Ratio is 1.93. This ratio is 50% above the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive.

I get a 10-year median Price/Cash Flow per Share Ratio of 13.64. The current P/CF Ratio is 16.84 based on Cash Flow per Share estimate for 2023 of $1.74, Cash Flow of $484.4M and a stock price of $29.31. The current ratio is 23% above the 10 year median ratio. The current dividend yield is 18% below the historical median dividend yield. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and above the median.

The current ratio is 23% above the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive.

Results of stock price testing is that the stock price could still be reasonable, but at the top of the reasonableness range. The dividend yield tests say the stock price is reasonable and above the median. The P/S Ratio test says the stock price is expensive. Basically, you start saying a stock is expensive above 20%. So, the P/S Ratio at 22% is not that far f rom the dividend tests that say the yields are 18% and 14% below the yields. The other testing is showing the stock price as reasonable and above the median or expensive.

When I look at analysts’ recommendations, I find Buy (1) and Hold (7). The consensus would be a Hold. The 12 month stock price consensus is $30.83. This implies a total return of 7.56% with 5.19% from capital gains and 2.37% from dividends.

Suncor Energy Inc

Sound bite for Twitter and StockTwits is: Dividend Growth Energy. Results of stock price testing is that the stock price is probably cheap. Debt Ratios are fine. The Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are fine. The current dividend yield is good with dividend growth low, but usually the growth has been moderate to good. See my spreadsheet on Suncor Energy Inc .

Is it a good company at a reasonable price? Energy companies are not my favourite investments. They are too volatile. I have around 1% of my portfolio in Energy. At the present time, the stock price seems relatively cheap. So, money can probably be made on this stock. However, I would not consider any energy stock a long term hold. Energy stock investing should also be done with money you cannot afford to lose.

I do not own this stock of Suncor Energy Inc (TSX-SU, NYSE-SU). I started following this stock as Petro-Canada (TSX-PCA). It was on Mike Higgs' list of dividend growth stocks. This was also a key stock for the Investment Reporter. My spreadsheet follows PCA into SU. PCA and SU merged in 2009. However, I am changing the spreadsheet into one for SU only. Note that the merger took place more than 10 years ago.

Premium Brands Holdings Corp

Sound bite for Twitter and StockTwits is: Dividend Growth Consumer. Results of stock price testing is that the stock price is probably reasonable. Debt Ratios are fine. The Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are fine. The current dividend yield is moderate with dividend growth moderate. See my spreadsheet on Premium Brands Holdings Corp .

Is it a good company at a reasonable price? This is the sort of stock I like as it is a dividend growth stock. It has done well for its shareholders and has a moderate dividend yield with moderate growth. The debt ratios and Dividend Payout Ratios are both fine. The stock price appears to be currently reasonable.

I do not own this stock of Premium Brands Holdings Corp (TSX-PBH, OTC-PRBZF). I was looking for another stock to follow and I found this is one of the top stocks in TD Bank's Canadian Equity Fund.

When I was updating my spreadsheet, I noticed that this company has had some good growth over the past 5 and 10 years. The total return in most long periods is also good. See chart below on total return.

This is a total return of 22.23% per year.

The current dividend yield is moderate with dividend growth moderate. The current dividend yield is moderate (2% to 4% ranges) at 2.95%. The 5 and 10 year dividend yields are also moderate at 2.34% and 2.68%. The Historical median dividend yield is good (5% to 6% ranges) at 5.81%. This company used to be an income trust and income trust had quite high dividend yields. The dividend growth is moderate (8% to 14% ranges) at 10.8% per year over the past 5 years.

The Dividend Payout Ratios (DPR) are fine. The DPR for 2022 for EPS is 77% with 5 year coverage at 81%. The DPR for 2022 for Adjusted Earnings per Share (AEPS) is 57% with 5 year coverage at 59%. The DPR for 2022 for Cash Flow per Share (CFPS) is 34% with 5 year coverage at 36%.

The DPR for Free Cash Flow (FCF) provided by the company is 43% with 5 year coverage at 42%. The DPR for Free Cash Flow, provided by some sites is negative currently with 5 year coverage at 551%. The problem with FCF is that all depends on how you calculate it. Often FCF varies greatly by which site you look at. My TD WebBroker goes with the company provided values, and that is good enough for me.

The corresponding historical ratios are 17.22, 22.34 and 25.29. The current P/E Ratio 21.91 based on a stock price of $104.53 and EPS estimate for 2023 of $4.77. The current ratio is below the low ratio of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively cheap.

I also have Adjusted Earnings per Share (AEPS) data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/Adjusted Earnings per Share Ratios are 20.87, 25.48 and 30.47. The current ratio is between the low and median ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I also have Free Cash Flow (FCF) data. The 5-year low, median, and high median Price/Free Cash Flow per Share Ratios are 13.47, 17.40 and 21.73. The corresponding 10 year ratios are 12.61, 16.41 and 19.62. The current P/FCF Ratio is 17.26 based on a FCF estimate for 2023 of $6.06 and a stock price of $104.53. The current ratio is between the median and high ratios of the 10 year median ratios. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable but above the median.

I get a Graham Price of $74.00. The 10-year low, median, and high median Price/Graham Price Ratios are 1.01, 1.40 and 1.70. The current P/GP Ratio is 1.41 based on a stock price of $104.53. I get a 10-year median Price/Book Value per Share Ratio of 2.82. The current P/B Ratio is 2.60 based on a stock price of $104.53, Book Value of $1,784M, and Book Value per Share of $40.18. The current ratio is 8% below the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I also have a Book Value per Share estimate for 2023 of $41.30. This implies a P/B Ratio of 2.53 with Book Value of $1,834M with a stock price of $104.53. The ratio is 10% below the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

I get a 10-year median Price/Cash Flow per Share Ratio of 20.60. The current P/CF Ratio is 10.35 based on a stock price of $104.53, Cash Flow per Share estimate for 2023 of $10.10 and Cash Flow of $448M. The current ratio is 56% below the 10 year median ratio. The current dividend yield is 49% below the historical median dividend yield. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively expensive. The problem with this test is that this company used to be an income trust and income trust companies can have much higher and do have much higher dividend yields than corporations.

I get a 10 year median dividend yield of 5.68%. The current ratio is 2.95% based on dividends of $3.08 and a stock price of $104.53. The current dividend yield is 10% above the historical median dividend yield. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

The current ratio is 18% below the 10 year median ratio. This stock price testing suggests that the stock price is relatively reasonable and below the median.

Results of stock price testing is that the stock price is probably reasonable. The 10 year median dividend yield test says that and it is confirmed by the P/S Ratio tests. Most of the rest of the testing is showing the stock as cheap or above and below the median or reasonable.

When I look at analysts’ recommendations, I find Buy (7) and Hold (2). The consensus would be a Buy. The 12 month stock price consensus is $114.22. This implies a total return of 40.92% with 37.97% from capital gains and 2.95% from dividends.
